If I knew the answer to this question, I’d be sitting on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean sipping on one of those fruity drinks with an umbrella in them. Seriously though, scientists have been curious about this for the last 50 or so years without too much luck finding an answer. It seems to be that there are genetic, as well as environmental causes. The problem with finding the answer lies with trying to find the genes responsible for eye conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. The genes for these conditions are not so easy to isolate as are genes for other health conditions. As science advances, and newer tools are discovered, hopefully we will find the genes that code for eye conditions, and maybe even correct for these ailments genetically instead of through glasses, surgery, or contacts.
